This job in rural Honduras with our project GUARUMA, focuses on using nature photography and
graphic arts with students from 5th grade primary to late teens. The project focusing on environmental
education has been in existence since the year 2000. Students have been working in macro/nature
photography and have been published in prestigious nature magazines and won many awards.
The person hired must be mature and a self starter, be well organized and seriously communicate with
the Foundation in Guatemala, Fotokids. S/he will be able to provide effective leadership to the
GUARUMA program team, and will conduct him/herself so as to be recognized as a leader among
peers. S/he will also have proven experience with cross-cultural teams and capacity building, individual
staff development, and strong mentoring skills. Speaking fluent Spanish is a must and the ability to live
in a small community, Las Mangas, a village of 300 people on the River Cangrejal.
The work will be two fold:
1. Teach nature photography and Photoshop classes to students from 5th grade level through high
school.
2. Design and execute a training program with the older students focusing on :
a. Employable graphics skills with the eventual goal of establishing a small STUDENT RUN design studio
b. Train the advanced students on how to teach photography.
The mission of GUARUMA is to increase the level of education and environmental awareness in the
Cangrejal watershed through the fusion of environmental education with an introduction of the latest
digital technology. A child’s first experience with the exciting use of media is merged with the idea of
ecological responsibility.
Responsibilities
- curriculum and lesson planning approved by Fotokids
- monthly status reports to Fotokids Guatemala
- finance balancing, keeping accounts
- group managing (staff, tours, students)
- organization representative (public speaking, presentations, conferences etc…)
- promotion via publications and networking
- printing/editing and working with older students
- designing (logos, calendars, pamphlets)
- workshop coordinator
- community involvement, decision maker
- Working with the Executive Director of GUARUMA on mutual projects
The 4th-6th-grade primary school level educational programs in Las Mangas include:
• Weekly environmental, photography, and computer classes to the 4th-6th school children
• Interactive ecology museum in Las Mangas
• Maintenance and tours of a trail near National Park Pico Bonito focusing on native trees and birds
• Environmental camps with children in the Cangrejal Watershed
• Presentation and information exchange about the environmental education process with teachers from
other municipalities.
Applicants must have at least a B.A., speak fluent Spanish, and be able to start immediately.
